Monster Kolor secret party West Coast

web17Once again it’s been so busy I’ve neglected this blog … if you need up to date info on what I’m doing and/or Max Toy info I post to the Max Toy site all the time : www.maxtoyco.com

Todd “Mechavirus” Robertson was in town so we figured that would be a good time to have an informal Monster Kolor paint party ! Lucky for us, Matt Walker owner and head paint guru sent along plenty of goodies for us to try !

we24I usually only run one hose, but bought a manifold to allow 4 airbrushes at once 😉

web27

Todd’s sister Courtney also came along and this was her first time with an airbrush ! Todd being the good brother he is showed her the ropes. First starting off practicing on a piece of paper.

web4Once she got the hang of it it was onto one of Todd’s new Ammonaito soft vinyl figures.

web5   web8Todd got down to business spraying a run of Yuudoku !

web10

web11I found another clear green with glitter Kaiju Eyezon, so of course worked on that …

web13Truth be told, really can’t get much done in a group situation, I prefer to work alone. So I didn’t really spray too much .. but got a good start on this one.

web6

web16Joining us was Jay222, who by now is a Monster Kolor fan.

web19

web18  Courtney is a photographer so she took some time out from painting to snap a few pics as well.web20Here’s Todd putting some serious thoughts in his work  😉

web7

Normally I wear a respirator  (face mask) while spraying …

web21… I have no idea why I look like this .. but i guess the fumes are getting to me  😉

web22Lots of new colors in this box … Monster Kolor “Shot Caller” paint was a favorite of mine … kinda a turquoise metallic colorweb28Jay222 working on a fish !

web29Nice color choices !

web1above and below some of Todd’s handy work. We didn’t get a chance to finish but got a good start to some figures.

web2

web3

We all agreed that Courtney was the winner today ! Her first airbrushed toy and it looked great ! Nice color selection, dare I say it was “pretty” !

With that we all had a great time, ate Hawaiian foods and learned about Team Cobra 😉 I want to give a huge Thanks to Matt Walker / Monster Kolor for his support over the years and for his awesome paint thats really helped changed the customizing world. Thanks also go out to Todd, Courtney, and Jay for making it a fun time as well.

Japanese Toys at the SFO Museum show

Image

I finally got around to seeing the new SFO Museum show called Japanese Toys ! From Kokeshi to Kaiju. For those who may not know the San Francisco airport ( SFO ) has an actual accredited museum contained within the various terminals and corridors.

Like me, you’ve probably seen various exhibits big and small while waiting for flights. I guess I never thought about the fact that these are all painstakingly designed, researched and displayed. Yes, just like a stand alone museum.

A quick back story, over a year ago I was contacted by SFO curator Nicole Mullen about participating in a group show at the SFO Museum about Japanese toys. The premise was to show a overview of toys made in Japan, from wood toys, tin toys, through modern plastic toys. Not just Monster or Kaiju toys, mind you, this aspect actually interested me. I see Kaiju toys in my room everyday, but to see other types of toys and characters I thought would make for a nice exhibit.

I was interested but did not really know how I felt about loaning out my 100+ toys for 8-9 months. While the exhibit would be about 6 months the process would involve coming to pick up the items, carefully wrapping them for travel to their offices. Once there condition reports and such were generated and they planned out how to display the 500+ items that would be the show. In fact, they would completely stage the exhibit off site before the actual display in the terminal.

Needless to say, each step of the way, the Nicole, Kelvin and Alisa and the SFO staff were not only professional but always open to communication about any of my concerns concerning any steps of the process. They were mindful to treat all items with museum gloves, archival packing and even in displaying them to be mindful of sunlight etc.

If they ever contact you about loaning items for a show I would give them all a big thumbs up 😉

Below is a brief tour of the show which is located beyond security in the domestic United terminal. Yes, the downside is you will need to be traveling to see the show ..because of 9-11, you have to go through security ;-( But, should be traveling I highly recommend taking a look before you board your plane ! There’s some really rare toys and displays that most collectors and fans don’t normally see 😉

Here’s the link to the show online as well : http://www.flysfo.com/museum/exhibitions/japanese-toys-kokeshi-kaiju

Image

A quick view of the exhibit down the long United terminal. I’m sorry these are not really in order of how the exhibit is laid out and I might have forgotten a display but for the most part I think I have pictures of most of the show.

Image

Here Max and I pose in front of a classic poster image from a Bullmark toys ad, 1970s.

Image

By the way, they have a very nice “free” brochure for the exhibit too.

Image

Giant Inu Dog sculpture .. yes not a Cat  😉

Image

Its a bit surreal to see “my” toys on display and looking at me  😉 But infact, as a collector you have to realize that these toys will most likely out live you and be passed onto another person down the line. Well for now I’m enjoying them and I’m glad they are on display for others to see and enjoy.

Image

I really like how everything is laid out. It’s hard to see but each figure has a wire support behind the leg, with a clear rubber waist support. They are all securely attached without taking away from the display of the figure.

Image

Kaiju display, the super duper sized Red King in the middle is a super duper rare Popy store display from the King Rory collection. Very nice to see one up close.

Image

If you’ve followed me for awhile you know I’m a huge fan and supporter of the various craftsmen in Japan, who still to this day, make these Japanese toys. I was happy to provide some items and images of Shimizu-san, who casts all of the Max Toys we make in Japan.Shown here are also vintage Popy molds from the 70s as well as original Kaiju Drazoran sculpt, test shots and paint masks.

Image

Image

The two items ( middle and left side ) are an Ultraman Jack and Lion Maru ride both circa 70s Japan. The one facing the other way is Kamen Rider V3 ( from Kimono My House collection ). I love these rides and was thrilled to see them elevated and displayed like this ! If only my toy room was so big I’d display them like this too  ;-P

ImageImageImage

Another case with various Ultra goodies from my collection  😉

Image

I’m trying to get in to touch my toys  😉

Image

So yes there are other cases in this exhibit besides my Ultra stuff … here’s some vintage tin robots. A few of these are from my collection as well  😉 Circa 50-60s Japan.

Image

Image

another view of the giant Inu Dog .. really cool !

 Image

above and below some paper items, kites, fans various toys and ceramic dolls.

ImageImage

While I’m not a doll collector, these were really cool examples of vintage Japanese girls dolls with kimonos.

Image

Knowing that quite a few West coast folks not only saw Ultraman, but Kikaida figures from my collection were also included.

Image

Max poses with a blow up of Ultraman, from the Marusan tin box.

Image

More paper items, Menko cards, trading cards also used to play games with.

Image

cool tiger / cat figure 😉

Image

Various vintage Kokeshi dolls and wooden figures.

ImageImage

Probably eclipsing Godzilla as a recognizable character in the states, is Hello Kitty. I;m sure my fellow Godzilla collectors will be up in arms about this 😉

Image

vintage Hello Kitty items from Sanrio collection.

Image

and of course, this crazy Hello Kitty dress worn by Lady Gaga  ;-P

Image

But of course whats near and dear to my heart is of course Ultraman … and here’s myself and Max in front of my Ultraman suit.

I need to find some boots for him 😉

Image

Well, there you have it I most excellent show ! I hope you have the time to see it as it runs thru April 2014. I was told through the whole run of the show, tens of thousands of traveling people will see it as they go thru the terminal. I hope it sparks the imagination of some kid to collect or create their own Kaiju of the future !

Design Festa 38 Tokyo Japan Max Toy Kaiju Trip

Ok in my ongoing effort to try to catch up with various Mark Nagata / Max Toy events … here’s some pics from my recent trip to Tokyo, and Design Festa #38. This was my second trip to Japan this year (2013) and I made may usual trips to the vinyl factory to see Shimizu-san and to the paint factory, the Maruyama Brothers. But the main focus was to attend the Design Festa show. I’ve actually been to Design Festa many years ago in my previous incarnation as toy shop / magazine owner… this time was a bit different in that I had a table and sold Max Toy stuff. DF is actually more a DIY / Artists show .. both art works and performance arts. I really like the vibe of this show and what little time I got to walk around enjoyed it. The range of talent is very impressive, I have to say.

So here’s the pics with spares comments  ;-P

2013-11-01 18.51.30This would mark my second trip for 2013 to Tokyo, though so much has happened this year that it felt like a year ago since I last was here. For Jay222 this was his very first trip and I could tell he was very excited  😉

Todd Robertson and Jay222 looking over the menu ..we all agreed anything ordered would be good !! We each traveled from 12-14 hours to get to Tokyo.2013-11-01 19.09.23sushi selection…of course amazing !

2013-11-05 09.11.36

So this day was free to do toy shopping .. I had but one request and that was to go to the Bullmark shop. I had no idea where it was but showed Yo a web site so he planned it out .. it was over by an amusement part in Asakusa. We made our way through the Sensō-ji temple … very cool …   2013-11-04 11.29.462013-11-04 11.30.32

We walked past the temple and saw this ride twirling in the sky  2013-11-04 11.47.57

after some confusion in trying to find the Bullmark store it looked like the store was located in this amusement park. We had to pay to get in. Three grown men going to a amusement park for 8 year olds … hmmm, come to think of it we are about 8 so maybe thats not an issue …  ;-P2013-11-04 11.47.12 2013-11-04 11.45.47

to say this all seemed like a bizarre David Lynch movie wouldn’t describe it .. but thats close enough … these rides have all seen their heyday .. it’s like this place was forzen in the late 70s. I guess the land has been sold, so it seems like this won’t be here much longer … glad I was able to experience it 😉2013-11-04 11.45.40

this big kid tried the same … check out the kid to the right ;-P

2013-11-04 12.02.56

Jay222 took a ride on a crazy spinning thing ( I have a video I need to upload) and got his fortune from this machine.

2013-11-04 20.28.49

Long day is over, next day is visiting Shimizu-san vinyl factory and Maruyama Brothers painting and vinyl factory.

2013-11-05 08.39.36

quick breakfast in the morning

2013-11-05 11.24.31

I never tire of visiting Master Shimizu-san and his vinyl factory. I’ve posted several videos of this Master at work like this one :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qUJ7TPKSns&list=TLys-Ga7JILxJpaeity-x2sbmM5zB2UJYH

or this one :

2013-11-05 11.18.28 2013-11-05 11.22.34 2013-11-05 11.19.16

Shimizu-san wasn’t casting this day, but you can see the Salt chemical in it’s solid form .. it’s heated by gas falme and will melt into a super hot liquid state … the molds filled with liquid vinyl are then place into the hot bath for various amounts of time .. the heated molds “cook” the vinyl in them .. and when pulled form the mold form the various pieces for the toys.2013-11-05 11.19.04 2013-11-05 11.18.59 2013-11-05 11.18.53 2013-11-05 11.18.42

various iron molds of Max Toy figures ( and tanks ! )2013-11-05 11.18.342013-11-05 11.24.12

I picked up this sweet test shot of Kaiju Axron, our latest vinyl Kaiju figure from Max Toy Company.2013-11-05 11.54.11 2013-11-05 11.54.00

We had lunch with Shimizu-san, he actually treated us (!) I was humbled that he would offer … my only regret is i could not converse with him .. but maybe this was a good thing as I would have grilled him about the soft vinyl history and to be honest this is a job for him and he’s not concerned about us toy guys ( haha )2013-11-05 11.47.50 2013-11-05 11.47.38

Todd enjoying his first baby ( toy ). After lunch we went to visit the Maruyama Brothers factory, I did not take pictures mostly because their were other peoples toys there and didn’t want to “reveal” something that I shouldn’t ;-P Avoiding Toy Politics and all ;-P Had a good meeting and bid them farewell till next time. By the way if you buy our Negora they are the ones that paint them all ..really amazing job to hand paint each one.

2013-11-05 15.23.48the wonderful thing about Tokyo is of course the subways can get you just about everywhere … still even the sub ways can be a big mass of various lines and what not, so Yo’s help in navigating was much needed.

2013-11-05 17.28.50

Our final dinner was to celebrate artist Teresa and her Kaiju Gals win … a all you can eat Brazilian meat restaurant in Harajuku.

2013-11-03 19.55.22

2013-11-05 17.53.17

while the idea of all you can eat meat sounds great, after a few rounds the tummy was so full … I had to throw in the towel … ;-P It was very tasty though !

2013-11-05 19.40.29we left the restaurant an followed Teresa to a designers studio near by….

2013-11-05 21.39.44

I’m sorry I did not take many pics but we met half of the two guy studio that is Zarigani Works  Very famous studio and we had fun with this new remote camera that took pictures in a crazy fish eye way … hard to explain but you will see this product out in the market soon … sorry the product name escapes me at the moment ( ! ) I also picked up another fav toy .. this wooden Ultraman figure !

uman

2013-11-06 09.29.51

well here’s a fried shrimp hot dog for breakfast .. it was Ok .. i think the mayo was too much for me ;-P

2013-11-06 11.58.03

on the way home via bus to Narita airport, yes Cats are everywhere in Japan !

2013-11-06 14.47.28

Many Thanks to my travel mates, Jay222, Todd, Javier for making this a super fun trip. My many toy friends for your continued support and of course this wouldn’t be a Max Toy trip without Yo Miyamoto’s continued support and friendship. Till next time in Kaiju Land !!!

Toy Karma 4 at Rotofugi gallery Chicago

Well it’s been awhile since last posting here …. been so busy with various Max Toy events … and I’m way late on posting this … the show is long over but we had a fantastic turn out for the opening ( Thank you to everyone who came out and traveled to the show ! )

Held every two years, it’s been what 7 years since the first one ?!! Crazy really .. who’d have thought Kaiju could be so popular and still going strong !

I want to get these pictures up so I’ll keep the text to a minimum and just say that nearly everything sold, but there are still a few pieces left via this link: http://www.rotofugi.com/gallery/exhibits/2013-tk4exhibit/

2013-10-05 18.37.57Rotofugi Kirby, Myself and Rotofugi Whitney. Without their ongoing support there would be no Toy Karma. Besides being great supporters of the Art Toy scene, they are good people, period … who work really hard to make it all work.

In my opinion, Rotofugi has the best combination of store/gallery space. The historic building has really high ceilings and wonderful wood floors lending to the over all atmosphere.

Here’s some pics of the process for these Alien Xam heads. I made a sculpt using Ave’s Apoxie sculpt. Using SmoothOn made a silicon mold from the original sculpt. It was a one piece mold so easy to make …

Tsuburaya 50th Anniversary Ultraman art by Mark Nagata

UltraArt_webI’ve had to keep this under wraps for a few months now, but now I can reveal this painting ! In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Tsuburaya Productions there will be an on going, multi year show that will travel Japan. The show will have original art, new toy designs based on Tsuburaya characters and more. I was honred to be invited to participate and to be honest would have been crushed if I was not asked (haha). For my part, I decided to paint Ultraman based on several influences. Of course, for those who have followed me thru the years, the major influence on me was the original Ultraman TV show and toys of the 60s. Once I figured out how many vintage toys there were of him .. well my life was consumed with tracking them all down ( my web site with some of my collection is here : www.ultramantoys.com ).  The other major influence on me is the artist Jack Kirby and Marvel Comic books. As I thought about these two influences it occurred to me that to my knowledge Kirby never illustrated Ultraman. I’m not even sure if he was aware of the Ultraman shows .. but, I thought, What if Jack Kirby had illustrated Ultraman ??

With that permise I began thinking about doing a tribute painting for the 50th Anniversary show… combining Ultraman and Kirby, with of course myself  ;-P

“Marvelous Ultraman” is the title of the painting and the process I took in creating it is below. The original will be on display for this show in Japan so if you are there I hope you go visit it for me  😉

With that I generated this first sketch featuring Ultraman’s foe, Alien Baltan in the background. And I’m trying my best to use a Kirby style but not so much that it doesn’t feel like my own art .. it’s a tough line to follow …

UmanSketch3My designs had to be approved by Tsuburaya Productions and Bandai .. but this first draft was rejected and Baltan had to be changed or removed (do to the style I rendered him in )

MefilasSketchNot wanting to sacrifice the style, I decided to use another foe, Alien Mefilas instead … and this time I got the approval 😉

2013-04-20 08.55.29I projected the sketch onto hot press illustration board and as my working method is made a full value pencil sketch onto the board.2013-04-20 11.47.49 2013-04-20 15.50.49Once the pencil work was completed, I started blocking in the darks in the background .. yes had to use “Kirby Krackle”   😉 I mostly work from back ground to fore ground …2013-04-21 11.48.26

Also I’m trying to keep things sorat flat like an old comic but not too flat  ;-P

2013-04-21 12.58.53 2013-04-21 14.24.49Adding color to the space back ground … using acrylic paints …2013-04-21 14.27.26 2013-04-22 10.05.26

I had to complete this painting fairly quickly, in all about 4 days worth, framed it, packed it up and sent it off to Japan.

UltraComicArt72Ah, but there’s more that I worked on …  ;-P I got another few approvals but for now I can not say what it is .. but I’m pretty excited about it all (!!) Hopefully we can reveal these things very soon … so stay tuned. I’ll also post more specific information about the venue, dates etc for this show. I had a blast doing this art and hope you enjoy it too !

Max Toy Company UpDates

Some quick updates with stuff coming up in shows … First up is this one off custom of Kaiju Negora or Devil Cat Negora … my homage for the Go Nagai tribute show at Q Pop gallery. The show opens Saturday, June 1st and from their past shows will no doubt be filled with many wonderful art and toys  😉 Check out their overview on Go Nagai … I learned lots from it  ;-D

QpopShow1and coming up at One Up Store in Japan is a show with toy maker Yamomark figures.I was sent 4 different figures to paint up .. I prefer to not mess with the toys appearance by adding extra sculpted details ( just my thing ) so decided on some nice painted details  😉

2013-05-14 10.42.02

above, each figure is sprayed black and has silver spray over it .. using an airbrush and paint brush to bring out the details.

2013-05-13 16.51.05

above “dry” brushing silver Monster Kolor over the bumps 😉 and jumping way ahead the final figures all sealed with a glossy coat and color change flakes. The flakes are bests een under a halogen type of light or in the Sun….

2013-05-14 13.32.13

I sometimes do what I call the “Galaxy” look on these toys… the surface of this one was perfect so i was able to add some planets as well … it’s a pain when there’s rough surface detail. And as you can see each star is hand done … dot, dot, dot … repeat !

side4side55back5close4close6bottom1Most guys do not show the bottoms of the toys they paint, but I thought I would and to take the time to say each piece I customize has a clear coat over it from top to bottom. One reason is to me it looks sloppy to have the feet not be clear coated. But mostly it’s something i learned from the Japanese model kits I use to build in the 90s. They would put insane details and even sculpt the under side of feet or in some cases sculpt details that would be covered or glued over. I use to think why they would do that, but read that the sculptor felt by not adding these details not only would he know that they were missing but the Spirit of the model would not convey the proper feeling to the model maker and viewer. Whoa. From that point on when i paint a picture or a figure I do my best to not skimp on the process and even if 99.9% of the people looking at the figure won’t see the bottom of the toy .. I know it’s complete and the toy will know too  ;-P

Anyways these all will be up for sale soon, so contact One-Up view their web site if you have any interest in them. Ok back to painting, have tons more to do for an upcoming show in Japan, SDCC 2013, Wonderfest Japan … Of those events, I’ll only be attending SDCC this year and it will be my last official appearance so hope to see you all at Rotofugi’s booth. I will keep attending these conventions but as a Fan from this point forward. But fear not I’m not exactly fading away… this will allow me to concentrate on Kaiju shows and other similar types of events.

Oh and don’t forget Toy Karma 4 in Chicago at Rotofugi .. I will be there in person 😉
