Kaiju Painting Process Mark Nagata Max Toy Company

It’s been awhile since I posted my art process so here are two recent examples. The first is an acrylic painting on canvas for the new Kaiju Eyezon figure coming out in June. AS you can see in the last image this will be the header card part of the packaging.

2013-04-08 12.22.37I render a pencil drawing on the canvas .. leaving some room for text etc to be dropped in later.

2013-04-09 13.33.02

Jumping ahead I’ve laid down a quick wash of Burnt Umber to tone the canvas. Here I’m blocking in the sky… mostly I work from the back ground forward in my art.

2013-04-09 16.58.56

Next, above and below, I’m adding darks to the buildings and slowly to the figures …

2013-04-09 18.33.36

also working on the sky and trees in the distance …

2013-04-11 16.14.28

adding colors to the buildings as well …

2013-04-11 17.10.48 2013-04-12 10.22.19

further refining above ….

2013-04-15 12.08.27Jumping ahead now working more on the figures …

2013-04-15 17.57.53

Almost done now just refining edges and adding highlights …

Eye2_art Eye3_artpostcard-8inx10in-h-frontArt is photographed and text is added in Photoshop and the front of the header card is done. I always find it a challenge to work with an image that will be reproduced in a smallish space, like on a header card, but hopefully it compliments the figure.

While working on the art above I was also asked to make a new piece of art fairly quickly for a special One-Up store gatchapon release. In brief it’s Mecha Nekoron MK2 fighting Micro Negora. The only restriction was to keep it simple and in a square format. The art would have to fit in the front of a machine.

2013-04-01 18.48.02In a couple of hours and using the toys I drew up this layout …

2013-04-02 10.03.52

using paynes grey acrylics over my pencils, adding darks and also using washes of the same color to add more depth…2013-04-02 10.04.11 2013-04-02 10.51.05 2013-04-02 11.13.44

Above is the drawing after using paynes grey over it .. it’s ready for color work now …

2013-04-02 18.31.47

using acrylics painted and airbrushed it’s just about done …Battle_art72

Above the image is done, this has been cleaned up a tiny bit in photoshop so One-Up could just use the image however they needed. The original was about 9×12 inches and has been sold in Japan.

… and below you can see the final art and how it was used.

By the way, I think they are still selling these figures .. check out this link. They come in random colors. 57982392_o1

so the other reason for traveling down to Burbank was to meet the original cast from the Ultraman TV show. First shown in Japan in 1966, the show has had a huge influence on many around the world .. including myself ;-P It could be argued that if i had not seen this show for the first time in 1974, I’d most likely not have gone down the path I’ve traveled. Not only do i collect Ultraman toys but my toy company is influenced by the toy makers from that era. I don’t get very “fan” boy about much but this event had me VERY excited !

The cast rarely appears all together at one event ( in Japan ) and never have appeared together in the USA, in fact only the actress who played Fuji, Hiroko Sakuri has been to the US previously. We entered the autograph room and to my surprise and old friend from Japan was there, Shigeko Kojima, who was managing the actors on the trip ( above pic )

another old timer ( haha ) whom I use to do Ultra related artwork for back in the day, but I never met in person, was Jim Cirronella. Jim was responsible for coordinating the actors to come to Monsterpalooza. It was good to meet Jim and catch up.ultra2Max and I greet actor Susumu Korobe, who played Hyata in Ultraman.

ultra3 ultra4 Ultra6Here we greet the suit actor Bin Furuya. He was the guy in the Ultraman suit, but later also played in the Ultraseven series.Ultra7 Ultra8Max greets actress Sakurai-san

I love this picture, it’s surreal to me that nearly 40 years later I get to meet these actors and thank you them in person. All were extremely gracious with their time and put up with all the fans ;-P

Later to a packed crowd of 200+ the cast took questions from the crowd … I have to say it was a very funny exchange with some great stories.

Check out this video :

Brad Warner was on hand to translate this event ( above ). Brad for years worked at Tsuburaya ( the company that made Ultraman ) and knows a lot about the shows. Brad is also a well known Zen teacher/ author as well, check out his books !

Sorry for the brief over view, I have to say i had a flood of emotions that day and upon my return there was more news that i will reveal in the coming weeks that really blew my mind 😉 What that is I can not say .. it will test all my abilities that’s for sure but in a weird way like this event will bring my career full circle for me.

New Kaiju Eyezon

I’m finally able to reveal the new Kaiju Eyezon !! Sculpted by Handsome Taro M in Japan ! This new vision of Eyezon as you can see is much more organic and monsterous ! Right now the sculpt is off to have it’s wax done, followed by Iron molds and paint masks. The first release is scheduled for May if all goes well ;-P

The size is the same as the first Eyezon about 10.5 inches tall. Full details very soon and more pics !

Eyezon_2013Sorry for the lack of blog updates but have been busy behind the scenes painting away customs ( the one below ) for various shows in the next few months plus we have a ton of new figures in various stages also coming out. I still have a blog about my visit to Shimizu-san to post as well …

Also to clarify something I emailed in a Max Toy email update, while this coming SDCC 2013 will be my last appearance, I will still be attending future SDCC, but as a Fan. My customs and toys will still be available at this and other events … and I will be at upcoming events including Toy Karma show Oct 5th in Chicago at Rotofugi, plus several other events this year and into Summer 2014.

Max Toy Japan trip February 2013 part 1

While I’ve been to Japan over a dozen times now, each time is different experience. I first traveled to Tokyo as a toy collector back in 2001, before Super7 and Max Toy Company with a small group of collector friends. That trip was memorable on so many levels but the one thing that stands out is the vintage toy stores we saw. I’m glad I got to experience those dusty, cramped stores brimming with treasures galore as they have all but disappeared in this digital age of online store fronts. The trips I take now are for my toy company and to touch base with my friend Yo Miyamoto ( Monster Boogie ) as we plan out Max Toy releases and such. Of course, it’s not all work and we do have some fun and this time that included visiting Master Sofubi caster Shimizu-san. While I don’t venture out of my toy cave too often when I do I’m greeted by many fans and am touched by their enthusiasm and thoughtfulness. My total lack of understanding and speaking Japanese is thankfully not an issue as many fans can converse with me, and actually we have the love of TOYS as our universal language. The current toy scene is thriving with a nice mix of older companies and newer ones in the mix. While the scene a few years ago was quite dire, I left Tokyo feeling that the new influx of collectors is helping the scene. Behind the scenes there’s just as much intrigue and back biting as ever ( haha ), but I’ve resigned myself to this all … I guess it’s just human nature to not get along  ;-P

Todd “mechavirus” Robertson was traveling along with me on this trip and I think it opened his eyes a bit to the toy scene in Tokyo (!)

My trip started at 4 am as i had to take a flight to Los Angeles and than onto Tokyo. I usually go direct from San Francisco, but I guess over all travel to Japan is slow, so for that particular day there was no direct flight .. sniff … the flight from here was delayed so by the time I landed, I had a mad dash done this very long walkway in LAX … !

web1I made it to the gate with 5 minutes till boarding .. phew … flight to Tokyo was uneventful about 12.5 hours.. as i slept off and on … flying these long distances I hate, but what can you do as this is the only way to get to the Land of the Kaiju !

cityOnce I’m in Tokyo, the sensations of sights, sounds and smells awakens my Japanese DNA. I swear by the end of my trips I’m actually thinking I understand people talking Japanese to me (!)

First order of business is getting dinner … Udon !

2013-02-08 18.27.09We check into the hotel in Shinjuku, called the Kadoya Hotel. Its a no frills hotel but the staff is good and can understand simple English. Most importantly it’s a good location to the buses going to and from the airport as well as the subway lines. Todd and i decide to take a stroll around the hotel .. but it’s late and I’m beat .. i kind look like this Rabbit …

2013-02-08 22.16.48

I don’t care what anyone says, only the Japanese can do cute on this level … period.

web19aThe next day we head out to see a art show by artist Click Crack. You may remember his fantastic Eyezon for the 5th Anniversary show.

2013-02-09 12.12.12

ClickCrackHis work is all hand crafted from a patchwork of materials, creating unique pieces… really beautiful work !

2013-02-15 12.24.46Next we are off to Harajuku to see a 3A fan produced show featuring hundreds of examples of these figures (!)

web58It’s a well produced show with nice display cases and hundreds of figures … while i don’t collect 3A, I have to say the bigger Bots are very appealing as are the Girl figures … I’ll have search Ebay for some of them !

2013-02-09 15.11.16web59Time for lunch … this time salisbury steak .. on a sizzling platter … yummy .. I got one with bacon. We have many discussions about upcoming projects that will span well into 2014 and even beyond 😉 In fact, we have one opportunity that will last 2 years .. but more on this later .. lets just say it concerns a character that is very dear to my heart ;-P

web55Snack time ! … these were good … !

web56We saw this car, have no idea the brand but everyone was taking pictures so of course I had to take one too … I don;t know why …

Finally it was time to head over to One Up store. Both Todd and myself judge a Negora Fan custom show at One Up store in Ahkihabara. One Up is a very cool store located in a new building filled with all things Otaku .. and funny to see my logo on the outside sign ;-P

2013-02-09 18.02.16

2013-02-09 18.18.50above, One Up Ken’s massive new, all vinyl figure … it’s like a hunk of carved wood, only it’s soft vinyl … how they molded this I don’t know … cool nonetheless … !

DolRoffoDol Roffo and his Negora entry .. always beautiful work and a great guy !

OneUp3I’m so happy many fans tuned out to the shows last night. Was great to see their work up close.. I wish they all could have won.

oneUp4 OneUp6 OneUp8This was my pick for a prize … awesome !

oneUp10 OneUp12 OneUp14 OneUp16 oneUp21Once again, thank you to Ken at One Up, his staff and of course the Fans that worked so hard in making their customs. Thank you all !

2013-02-09 21.05.56Dinner … it’s beef time !

2013-02-09 21.36.17I got a combo of steak and hamburger. I’ve mentioned this before, the protions here are just right .. I know Dead President’s Matt Walker would starve, but the amount of meat was not massive by any means.

2013-02-09 22.06.49Ken remembered my favorite .. Melon Soda with Ice Cream … ! God, I love this … !!!

web48Back at my room, I enjoy this special gift a fan made for me …!!!  😉 When I showed it to Yajima-san, I’d never seen him laugh so hard .. he started to cry he was laughing so hard  ;-D … it does look like me .. haha … !

web69The next day, Sunday, we have a table at Wonder Festival so walking up super early we drive over to the venue about an hour or so from Shinjuku, where we are staying. Set up is straight forward however, Yo has to get paperwork in order, chairs and such .. as I look around the tables start to slowly fill up and various displays are being built around us.

2013-02-10 15.10.02Stopping by the Max Toy table is the one and only Kaji aka Blobpus … fresh from his trip to TAG gallery in LA. Such a talented artist and a master sculptor !

2013-02-10 16.09.12It’s hard for me to balance being a Fan and a toy maker … but i made sure to stop by one of my inspirations, M1-Go’s Yuji Nishimura. Yuji was one of the first to collect these soft vinyl toys ( Bullmark ) but also has amassed the largest toy and TV / Movie prop collection in Japan. The collection is so big he has his own museum … I’ve been there and it was simply jaw dropping … ! Yuji through his company M1-Go paints his figures, too … check out this video !

2013-02-10 10.52.42

2013-02-10 16.26.22I have to say my greatest thrill was to finally meet one of the founders of Bullmark, Saburo Ishizuki. As we talked and he found out I was from San Francisco, he said that Bullmark had imported vinyls there back in the mid 70s. I told him thats how i came to buy Bullmarks when i was 10 years old ;-P I always think it’s neat and strange at the same time when my worlds collide and get to meet creators and artists … yes surreal for sure !

You can also see whats for sale via their web page here – http://www.bullmark.co.jp/

2013-02-10 17.07.57After a long day that’s it… table cleaned up and we are done for this show. Look for Max Toys at Summer Wonderfest 2013 … though i will not be there as I’ll be at SDCC.

2013-02-10 19.31.47Finally met Saikobi creator .. who gave me this very cute Dog finger puppet.

2013-02-10 19.05.40Dinner was Viking Style or All You Can Eat dinner … yummy !!

2013-02-10 18.46.00

web64I slept like a rock and barely got up to my alarm … today we have an easy day of it, it’s Monday and a Holiday for Japan. Its crowded as we get onto the subway to head over to Nakano Sunshine Mall with Mandarake and tons of stores.

2013-02-11 13.09.37One Up has there original location here .. they had a nice selection of Max Toys on display as well.

2013-02-11 13.26.59I was a good boy and though i was tempted to buy some vintage items … I held back ;-P I was happy enough to see first hand some really rare figures, like ones in the $10,000 range so that was fun.

2013-02-11 14.46.55Time for lunch as we head off into the back streets around the mall …

2013-02-11 14.55.44We decide on Okonomiyaki, but Hiroshima style … a favorite of Yo’s.

2013-02-11 14.59.57 2013-02-11 15.07.24All I can say is it was flat out fantastic meal ! I savoured every bite !

2013-02-11 16.16.20  So one of the missions today was to look for some Japanese YuGiOh cards for the boy .. we randomly found this place and I was able to score some cards. I wish Max was along as I’m sure he would have seen cards he needed .. plus he could have joined in on a game or two  ;-P I’m going to take him along next year, by which time he should be able to speak some Japanese, since he’s studying it now ;-P

2013-02-11 19.50.23We also searched a Toys R Us but nothing on Max’s list was to be found … time for dinner  ;-P This time we found a GoGo Curry … yummy ! Though I should have gotten the Devilman curry set !2013-02-11 19.53.19 2013-02-11 19.53.54mmmmmm, curry ……

I’ll be back in November for Design Festa and we have some special projects to announce over the next few months as well. Max Toy Kaiju UpDates

Phew .. sorry for the lack of updates here, of course you can always get Max Toy / Mark Nagata updates via the Max Toy site, and my Twitter – @maxtoyco , plus Instagram – http://instagram.com/maxtoyco

So we have a mishmash of stuff this time .. first up I have a few 3×3 inch sketches for the Giant Robot Post-It Note show, opens this Saturday December 8th in Los Angeles.

Did a bunch of these custom Micro & Mini Negora below… but, they are now sold out  ;-(

also should announce that artist Todd Robertson – Mechavirus – and I will be customizing various Kaiju Negora for a upcoming show at OneUp store , Japan. The show is called

私のいじったネゴラ展  – Watashi-no-ijitta-negora-ten

 私の means “My”
いじった means “customized” (well actually いじる means “mess with” or “play with” but it can be used for customized as well)
ネゴラ means “Negora”
展 means “exhibition” or “show”

So right now fans are buying blank mini Negora via OneUp and customizing them for this show. They will be displayed at OneUp along with our customs .. and when Todd and I are in Tokyo we will be judging them and awarding the top prizes  😉

Plus we’ll be attending Winter Wonderfest at the Max Toy table with a ton of new figures and goodies  😉 So stay tuned for pics of those….

and while I’m talking about shows, can you believe next Oct 4th, 2013 is the opening of Toy Karma 4 at Rotofugi !!! We hold this every other year, so you can do the math … I will of course be traveling to the wonderful Chicago for this show, so mark your calendars and hope to see you in 2013 !

There’s a bunch of stuff in between that shall be revealed as we get into 2013 … very exciting time for Kaiju lovers, I must say !

Custom Toy Painting with Todd Robertson and Will Long

Artists Todd Robertson and Will Long flew out from Massachusetts way to attend the 5th Anniversary Kaiju Eyezon show a few weeks back .. while they were out here in addition to eating  ;-P we found time to paint a Kaiju Eyezon figure.

Here’s a video and some pics

above: will selecting Monster Kolor paints

For those who don’t know I work alone. I’ve never been in a studio, though it sounds like it would have been fun at some point in my art career .. but mostly I can’t really seem to get much done if others are around  ;-P So, whenever I have fellow artists over to paint I’m not sure what to do !

above: Will begins with a nice pattern on the top of Eyezon

Actually Todd and Will are studio mates, so the thing I noticed right off the bat is they both were able to give each other suggestions while painting .. and in some cases, one would grunt and the other would totally understand it ! haha … and they’re not even twins !!

I guess the more I think of it, other than the step by steps I post here, I never have to articulate what it is I’m doing .. so while painting with these guys I found myself “thinking” too much as opposed to just painting freely as i do when I’m alone.

So it’s for sure a skill to be able to paint while talking about what it is you are doing … like Bob Ross ;-P

As you can see from the finished piece below, it really came out nicely. While you see the three areas we worked on we also did some over lap to make the transition between them smoother.Oh, this one had a black body with clear arms and legs.

By the way, we are working artists, so while I wanted to keep this piece in my colection, we did sell it to a lucky collector  ;-D

Both Todd and Will invited me out to their place to paint on the East Coast .. for some reason i never seem to make it past Michigan in my travels .. but I think there will be something brewing for 2014 .. yes, 2014 !! ;-P I’m fully booked for 2013 ( I can’t believe it ) but we have something that we hope to make extra special 😉 .. more on that in 2013 …

I had a good time and look forward to my next painting adventure with the next guy ;-P But for now i must be alone to paint my Kaiju !

Fantasy Kaiju Eyezon sculpt by Mark Nagata

I’ve sculpted little things for myself off and on thru the years. When I was a teen and wanted to make a latex mask but wasn’t sure about what materials to use or where to get them I sculpted little 3 inch size masks, made plaster molds and brushed latex in the molds to make them. Later using Sculpey I would keep sculpting little heads of various monsters like these below ….

this one has led eyes  ;-P

While I enjoyed sculpting, illustration was my true passion so that’s what I concentrated on in art school and as a profession.

With the 5th Anniversary Kaiju Eyezon show approaching I got the bug to do what I call a Fantasy Eyezon sculpt for the show. I wasn’t concerned with molding it or being able to replicate it later .. simply a one of a kind sculpt that was an image I had in my mind.

Now if you saw my other post about the “I Scream Cone ” custom show, the base actually started off for that figure … but having ditched it, it was a perfect base for what I wanted to do here. Now I have no formal training in sculpting ( and it shows ! ) but rather just enjoy pushing the clay ( or Aves Apoxie Sculpt in this case ) around. So with little pressure on me other than finishing it in time for the show here’s some pics of my process ….

using wire and apoxie sculpt to make the armature for Eyezon …

form is blocked in and allowed to dry so i have a nice base to work off …

slowly refining the shapes …

back side, holes are where I’ll put the horns …

coming along nicely …

obviously I’ve skipped forward a bit, I didn’t take as many pics as i had to finish this up in time for the show … but here’s the final sculpt.

I decided to paint this with a Bronze like finish so i base coated it in black and dry brushed gold V color over the whole sculpture.

Over all i really like who it turned out .. while I can see a few short comings in my sculpting the over all vision is what was in my head  😉

And here it is in the current 5th Anniversary Kaiju Eyezon show at Double Punch San Francisco. Show runs thru December so please go check it out and the other awesome pieces in the show !
