Kaiju Eyezon 5th Anniversary show

I’ll be posting a series of blogs leading up to the Eyezon Anniversary show this Saturday at Double Punch store & gallery in San Francisco. I’ll be there along with Mecha artist Todd Robertson and artist Will Long ( if he can re book his flight from back East ). Show opens at 6pm-9pm. The show runs thru December, in case you can’t make it on Saturday.

Today I’ll start with some quick process shots of a Eyezon painting I did. I used acrylics on 24×24 inch canvas. And yes it will be for sale at the gallery 😉

Not shown I started with a full toned pencil drawing .. followed by a wash of color over the whole canvas. I took it outside and begin layering various splatter and such …

also would wipe away certain areas .. just building up a nice random surface to work off of

Now blocking in the eyes … to me the eyes are what will make or break the painting …

added some shading with an airbrush and details with a brush ….

adding blue-ish under lighting … increasing the contrast overall …

and the final painting … Ta-Da ! See it in person at Double Punch ! 😉

Next blog, the customs !!

Mark Nagata / Max Toy customs

Sorry for the lack of posts, been very busy with a ton of customs and the upcoming 5th Anniversary Kaiju Eyezon show .. which opens November 3rd, at Double Punch store / gallery in San Francisco next week ! I’ll have another post devoted to that show and post the customs being sent in … I can’t believe the amazing customs the artists have done and can’t wait to show you all !

First up, I have this custom Hell Lotus figure in the Nov 3rd show in Singapore.

Using the basic Hell Lotus figure which is already cool to begin with .. I sat for an hour or so and was stumped about what to do with it. I didn’t want to simply repaint it .. thats too easy .. as i gazed into the souless eyes .. it struck me … a trio of faces, two being Kaiju ! Kinda like an angry God with three heads … oh and flames too !

Not sure I can pull this off, but away I go heating up the head, popping it off and cutting away .. too late to change my mind at this point !

I decided on Kaiju TriPus and Kaiju Dualos heads .. cutting each to fit all three together .. using Apoxie Sculpt I fused them together …. plus added a new neck plug to reattach the head later after clear coating …

more views of the new heads …

top view shows you the way each is fused together. At this point I’m not sculpting the flames just yet, but will let this dry so i have a solid base to work on top of …

Here’s the flames being added between each face transition … at this point I don’t have any more inprogress pics … so without further ado … Ta-Da ! the final piece !

Thanks to Jackson and everyone at Mighty Jaxx for inviting me to this show.   More info on the show and how to purchase at their web site : http://mightyjaxx.com/

Next up we have this Ice Scream Man custom I did for the Dia Del Helado Muerto show at Clutter Gallery in New York, opens November 10th.

Using a Brutherford Industries Ice Scream Man resin figure, much like the custom above I had to sit awhile and figure out what the heck I was gonna do with this one. It’s a great concept figure to begin with so i was trying to not to destroy the feeling of it.. but also wanted to incorporate my usual Kaiju theme .. meaning how do i get my Max Toys in there !  ;-P

I thought that having it inverted back up and adding a few Kaiju scoops would be cool .. but how to hold up the cone ? Ah, I thought I’d make a tentacle wrapping up around the cone to hold it up .. cool .. thats it !

Picked a nice large wood base and glued in some wire where the tentacle would go …

ah, works nicely … I can see it now taking shape …

using Aves Apoxie Sculpt to rough in the basic shape, I’ll let this dry so i have a nice firm base to work off of …

So at this point have lots of detail done …

Here we have the the test fitting .. I decide to add an “Eye” peering up at the cone, too …

and the back side .. looking good so far … for some reason I decide to re-read the shows concept / description and …

Oops !!!  .. it’s a Day of the Dead subject, so the tentacle was totally wrong for this concept ! Arrgghhh … Ok, so scrap the tentacle .. no worries, I know what to use this tentacle for .. as you will see in an upcoming post  ;-P So, I have to think fast, I still need something to hold this Ice Scream cone …Day of the Dead .. Skeletons … Ah !

I thought I skeleton hand emerging from the ground and holding the ice cream would work out nicely … So with this new concept I set about it … time for a new base and to start over …

Using wire and Apoxie sculpt to tack into place the figures .. yes the anatomy is whacky but i wasn’t going for real .. but more a cartoonish feeling …

Test fitting this hand .. seems good …

The sculpting went really fast .. I guess all my years of Universal Monsters and Goosebump book covers it’s second nature to me  ;-P

added some ground cover and went out to the backyard to grab some rocks, too ;-P

Final test fit and it looks good.. also worked on fusing the two Kaiju parts as well, using Apoxie sculpt to make some drips etc .. also re-sculpted the Ice Scream man teeth back in after cutting them out …

Base coated the whole piece with Monster Kolor black and dry brushed over it with white.

Here’s the painted base, with added dried up weeds and such .. the whole piece had a final MK matte coat to seal the paint.

Now to paint the cone it self … I knew I wanted very vibrant colors to contrast with the base colors … plus it would be glossy and have glitter in it  ;-P

Titled, ” I Scream Kaiju !” my entry for this show 😉

Phew … done and sent off  😉 So there you have it, just a few of the customs I’ve been doing the past month. As you can see making these customs can be tricky but i do like the challenge each one proposes each time. For more information about this show or to purchase this piece contact Clutter Gallery via this LINK.

Peace Project Japan art show

My painting for the Peace Project show represents my vision of the Goddess of Peace. Half Dove and half Women this Goddess hovers between the Earth and the Stars hoping for Peace for Mankind.
Title: Peace Goddess
Artist: Mark Nagata
Media: Acrylic paints on 20×24 inch canvas
Monster Kolor clear coat varnish
Date: Sept 2012
Here’s some pics of my process for this show. I was sent this canvas and the only direction was the subjects of Peace and Love.At first i thought hmmm, how shall i paint a Kaiju into this  ;-P but the more i thought about it Kaiju seemed to me to be too self serving … while Peace and Love seem to be out of fashion these days, it’s something the World could definitely use much more of.
If you look closely you’ll see that the way I posed the figure with the circles and birds is loosely in the shape of the Peace symbol.
The painting will be auctioned off in Japan. I’ve donated the proceeds to help the Earthquake and Tsunami victims in Japan.
while 99% of the time I know exactly what I’d like to paint.. i gave this one a bit more time to thing about how I wanted to convey the subject of Peace … mostly I wanted a more classical feel and not some Kaiju stepping on buildings  ;-P
the image of a dove head and woman’s body appeared to me in a dream … so with that idea in my mind I started out sketching onto the canvas. For better or worse, I rarely do thumbnails of full sketches prior to painting… I did draw a few Dove heads from the internet but mostly to get the shape down …
basic sketch on the canvas
adding clothing over the figure and adding some graphic elements
at this point the sketch for the figure is done and the doves flying below are blocked
the sides have been painted, here the middle section is masked off along with the figure to spray the sky. I try to work from the back ground forward when painting.
Sky is almost done at this point
all the masks are taken off so i can see how the back ground is working .. so far,  so good …
figure is sprayed .. I’ve gone dark so i can pull of the mid tones and highlights ..but I want the figure to remain fairly dark over all …
the next few pictures I’m bring out the doves, the figure and clouds …
a close up of the detail work …. by the way not shown I’ve added gold leaf to the 3 circles …
at this point I’m pretty much done .. slight adjustments .. but the deadline is near .. so I’m done  ;-P
Using Monster Kolor Clear Coat with a soft brush to appy the final varnish .. this step seals in the paint but also brightens and give more depth to the painting … although the depth is something that you would only see in person.
Many thanks for Akashi-san, President of Medicom for this wonderful opportunity  and as always Yo Miyamoto for this ongoing help and encouragement.

Giant Robot Biennale 3 at Japanese American National Museum

Here’s what i sent in for this show opening this weekend, Sept. 23rd.

I was sent a David Horvath Ugly Dolls figure ( building ) + a Giant Robot mascot figure to customize for the show. I decided to make a diorama out the figures and include Eyezon in the mix. Above a rough idea of where I would layout the figures ….

with that in mind I start laying in Apoxie Sculpt for the street and side walk …

adding cracks and textures ….

Using an acrylic rod in the back to suspend the Giant Robot figure .. I drilled a hole in the base to hold the rod in place ….

starting to paint …

close view , I decided to add billboard style postings to the building as well …

top view

back view

and the final completed set.

Title is: “Two Kaiju & and Robot Walk Into a Bar … ”  😉

Mixed media: Monster Kolor, V Color, Apoxie Sculpt

Artist: Mark Nagata

Artist Daniel Goffin Baked Potateorite Kaiju Eyezon project

I’ve been lucky enough to work with many very talented artists, some multiple times. While the goal is to make a living at what we do, I believe in having Fun along the way and to think out of the box so to speak in whatever project we are doing. Artist Daniel Goffin always delivers an out of the box effort and this new customized mini Kaiju Eyezon project is proof of that !

A short back story, my Kaiju character is called Eyezon and I based it’s design in part on a potato with those “eyes” and tubular things that can grow from them. So it’s basically a mutated potato. With that, Daniel came up with the following concept and package design below. I took images from his Flickr account  ;-P
of his process for this…

above and below Daniel is working out his idea roughly with card board …

the Potateorite is taking shape … you can see how the Eyezon will fit inside the package …

above the final design, and below all packed up and painted …

when i got the figures they were all wrapped with foil … just like a baked potato !

as you pull the string open the top portion tears away …

revealing the eyezon wrapped in iridescent wrapping …

oh !

the figure unwrapped, each one is slightly different and is cast in clear Japanese soft vinyl, hand painted by Daniel with colored, resin guts inside each one !

the opened package serves as a display as well  😉

each is hand numbered … this one is mine  ;-P

and the colored resin guts inside really are cool !

Excuse my brief comments, but I think you’ll agree this toy release had much thought and planning involved ! We just offered these to Max Toy Club members and if any are left we will post them to our web store ( http://www.maxtoyco.com ) in the next few days. Only 10 are available and each is $100 plus shipping and CA taxes if your in the state.

I’m still giddy from opening this figure .. too bad you can only open it once  ;-P

Max Toy Company Singapore Toy Game and Comic Convention 2012

Has it only been 4 days since returning from Singapore ?! I actually had only mild jet lag this time … much less than when I go to Japan for some reason.Maybe because I had to get right back into work .. it almost feels like I wasn’t there at all  ;-P

In any event here’s my brief overview of the trip.

Coming right after SDCC 2012 I knew I had to get going on the various customs and exclusives i was going to bring to Singapore. I asked a few folks there what I should bring and how much … but to be honest their toy scene is just getting started and they really couldn’t tell me what to do ;-P I figured I’d be a cross section of Max Toys and in various price points.. so it should be enough .. or so I thought … !

I’ve never been a guest at a convention so I was very honored to be asked by STGCC. I thought it would nice to take along the family as well and even though Max had started school .. well I think this is more important for him to experience …so he came along, too.

The flight was in two parts and in total some 17+ hours ;-(  Thats the down side … after 11 hours to Tokyo we had a brief stop over at Narita airport … I got a quick ramen bite to eat … and back on the plane to Singapore ! A mere 6+ more hours … glug …

Being an American, I’m naive about this part of the world .. as you can see the various Asian countries here are all fairly close to each other … in fact, it’s this closeness that has made Singapore such a center of finance and commerce to these other Asian countries.

We arrive at the airport, gather our luggage and our greeted by a driver to take us to the airport. The first thing we noticed is despite it being midnight the weather is warm and muggy … two things i don’t care for ;-P On the way to the airport we can see that everything is clean and well maintained. The driver gives us a bit of back history of Singapore, and yes, you can not chew gum ;-P

Arriving at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel we step inside the marvelous lobby with super high ceilings and these cool glass sculptures on the seats… looks like water.

By the time we settle in it’s nearly 1:30 am and we have to get up and be ready by 8am .. glug .. what day is it ?!!

Its funny how the night can obscure things .. so with the dawn we could see more of the vista from our room. Even though there is a slight haze .. the view is very cool.

Breakfast in the hotel is a nice selection of Chinese and American food …. really yummy. Oh I don’t think I mentioned it but everyone speaks English (!) so unlike when i travel to Japan, communicating is very easy !

The hotel is part of larger complex, a high end mall and casino .. yes, Sands (casinos) is the owner, think Las Vegas .. but to be honest not as cheesy … very nicely done interior and everything is SO clean … cleaner than Disneyland I’m afraid to say ;-P Maybe because this complex is only 2 years old .. but still… Oh and with super high end shops like Gucci etc .. this really only caters to the wealthy tourists and gamblers from Asia… not us poor artists and toy makers  ;-(

Here’s a view of the outside … striking profile to the building the top is a pool and observation deck with views all around.

So it was not planned but my contact at STGCC, Rita Magnus, had asked if i would like to attend a press showing promoting the show. As we walked over we also met the famous Marvel comic book artist Leinil Yu (!) .. I love his work !

My geek out moment I had to get a picture with him and Max  ;-P He’s a Nice guy, too !

Along the walls they had samples of products showing or selling at the convention .. so there was some Max Toy items, too. The main press conference was featuring Leinil, Tristan Eaton, Andy Diggle and two CosPlayers from Japan. There’s a brief interview session and pictures are taken …

Here I am wondering why I’m even at this press conference  ;-P I briefly talked to some reporters about my toys and that was it.

Ok so with that taken care of it’s Friday and we have a few hours open to go explore before a dinner at night. We could have set up but ( which we should have ) but instead went out for a walk to this food court. While only a 15 minute walk the weather was very humid and made it seem like a 1 hour walk  ;-P

There was a line at this booth so we figured that must mean it’s good, right ? The chef was dishing up bowl after bowl of various noodle and fish ball soups …

This one bowl of fish ball soup was awesome ! Simple, clean and bright tastes … the noodles were not doughy at all …. wonderful.

We also had chicken rice which was also good …

And I had to try the sugar cane juice … it was not as sweet as i would have thought and had a kind of grassy after taste that was not a favorite of ours .. haha …

At night we had an amazing meal that had so much food we could not eat it all ! Best of all we had the famous Singaporean Chili Crab ! Really good, and check out those claws .. they’re huge ! Attending the dinner at my table were Mark Brooks ( Marvel comics artist), Leinil Yu ( Marvel comics artist), Andie Tong ( Marvel comic artist ), Mark Torres ( IDW comic artist ), Andy Diggle ( Comic book writer ) other tables had The Beast Brothers, Tristan Eaton, Gabby Tiongson …. sorry if I left anyone out …

The next day we got up early as we had to set up at the booth ! Yikes I was getting a bit worried as we’d have to do so in under one hour. My set up was going to be very simple, just the toys for sale, one vertical banner .. that’s it. I actually did not know how the booth was laid out so that was a bit of a concern to me .. but in any case we packed up and headed over to the convention center.

Sorry not many pics of the set up as it was a blur .. pulling out merch, pricing everything all while various folks came up to say hello .. haha .. add to this the mild jet lag .. I’m not sure who I met  ;-P

Once the doors opened the next few hours were a total blur as nearly 50% of what i brought sold ! The booth was looking vary sparse at this point … everyone kept asking me if I’d have more on Sunday … yikes … well … nope  ;-P

This day I had a signing scheduled so i took off for that .. it was nice to be able to met the fans and drawing something for them  ….

Something I don’t do often … but was nice to hear what types of toys they grew up with .. not too different actually from us in the US ! Over all the fans are some of the most polite and gracious I’ve encountered  !

I didn’t get much a chance to get out of the convention but when i did it was packed not only inside but outside as well ! The day was very long, from 10am to 8pm so by the end of the day the family had enough of the con and retreated to the hotel .. while I ventured out to try some local food. 😉

I was too busy eating to take any pics but it was all really good .. these deserts were really good ! I have no idea what was in them .. fruits and shaved ice !

The next day, Sunday, the weather was less hazy but just as hot. Good thing the hotel is connected to the mall and hotel via under ground walk ways .. and of course air conditioned !

We should have tried these  ;-P

Sunday, and we have almost sold out of everything we brought .. the booth is looking empty but lucky for me local max Toy collector and supporter Edward brings his collection to display at the booth. This was good so folks could see what I make and see some of the customs, but the downside was everyone wanted to buy the ones on display ;-P

Edward an I had a talk scheduled and so off we went. It was only a half hour and went well I thought. We even gave away a Boy Karma figure ;-P

Right after that I rolled into another talk this time with Martin Hsu, The Beast Brothers, Coarse, Tristan Eaton and our host, Jeffery Koh ( Flab Slab gallery ).

I have to admit I work in a vacuum of sorts .. I don’t follow the toy scene too much .. mostly because I have so much to keep up with with Max Toys it leaves me very little time to simply surf around and check out every ones work. Having said this what i took away from this talk is that everyone is very dedicated to their craft and we all put in countless amounts of hours towards it.

Everyone makes it look easy but the real truth is we all are working very hard and on multiple fronts. Everyone of us were leaving within the next day so we could go back to work or fly off to other commitments. We all are having a good time in what we do but toys are not child’s play.

and finally i had one more signing to go … here I am with left to right, Jefferey Koh, (crazy) Martin Hsu, Me and Max. Good times !

Up till this time I’ve had very little time to actually walk around the show, so since the booth was nearly empty I ventured off .. the first person to stop by was Andy of Toys R Evil blog. He was very busy with many people looking to buy and talk to him .. so i had to make my way to grab him and have a brief chat .. and of course pick up his special STGCC zine edition. Andy go the ball rolling in telling STGCC about Max Toys so i am in debt to his kindness and support !

Anna looking very bored in our empty booth  ;-P I decide to close up early and we all could walk around and take a much needed break.

We came back after “resting” … as old folks must do and found out someone took our sign 😉

From left to right: Jeffrey Koh, Myself and Edwin Kwan. Both of these guys have been supporters of Max Toys and not only encouraged STGCC to bring me in but also helped with sales, introducing me to many artists and the on stage interviews. Off site they both took us out to dinners and drove us around. Really too kind !!

Here are some misc pics of the convention in no particular order. My impression is that CosPlay and Comics were what most of the attendees were most familiar with. However, the presence of us Toy guys seemed to make a big impression. Hot Toys had a huge booth and needless to say they were busy all weekend long. I for one would return and i think the others I talked too also would return to this show. I have to also say that Rita and her whole STGCC crew were so kind and ran the show perfectly.

I’m sorry if i didn’t post your picture here as I may not have a copy but below are just a small sample of the nice folks and fellow artists that stopped by the booth. Again I’m very thankful to all the wonderful new fans that took a look at our toys. I’m sorry we didn’t bring enough .. but next time we will !

Above: I was able to meet Plastic Culture Joshua Artono .. the red blob is.. well… something that we are working on ;-P Stay tuned …  😉

Fans are really the same any where you go in the world  😉

Comic and Toy artist, Mark Torres looking spiffy in his suit !

My favorite custom Eyezon and it’s new owner !  😉

Up and coming artist, Gaby Tiongson. He gave me these cool screen prints but the large piece on the right is an original art done in Sharpie on watercolor paper  !! and it’s Ultraman !! I was floored he just gave this to me !!! I will frame it and place it into my Ultraman museum ! Many thanks to Gaby (1) and Gaby (2) !

The Killer stops by  ;-P good to finally meet up !

Eddie Sung is a incredibly talented photographer based in Singapore but is known for his Rock and Roll pictures of many famous singers and bands including Blondie. Thanks for the book !

A final picture at the booth and the show is a wrap for 2012 !

We all went out to dinner to a night market. The weather was still hot and humid but i was told not as bad as it could have been.

above: Sting Ray .. actually to me was very mild tasting fish-like.

I’m not sure what this one was called but it was yummy .. sorta Indian type of sandwich…

We actually could not stay too late as we were leaving for the airport at 3 am !! So we said our good byes and went back to pack and sleep only for a few hours. The plane ride back was slightly shorter as we were flying with the jet stream, arriving back in San Francisco, on a Monday morning.

A MerLion figure was my souvenir from Singapore … but more importantly was the new friends, artists and fans I met. While we didn’t get to see much of Singapore, what little we did see we enjoyed and I know we will go back again… it’s just too bad it’s so far away !

DZ40 – Devilman Mazinger Z 40th anniversary event

A few months ago I was honored to be asked to submit a customized toy and painting for a special show celebrating the 40th anniversary of iconic characters Devilman and Mazinger Z created by the legendary, Go Nagai. Dubbed ” DZ40″ the event will take place August 17 – 31, 2012  at Tokyo’s Tokyo, Tokyu Plaza, Harajuku, Tokyo (admission is free, open 11am – 9pm)

The web site is here:  http://vision8.jp/dz40/

I didn’t have much time to complete both so the pressure was on ! But I’m up for a challenge so here we go !

First up was a customized version of King Negora, or Devil Cat Negora ! Below is the step by step process I went thru ….

Starting with a white based vinyl King Negora I heated up the back to make slots to hold the wings in place …

Meanwhile using thin cardboard i cut out the wing shapes and started applying apoxie sculpt to them.

slowly building up the wings here ….

once the basic shape was achieved I sculpted in some texture or rough fur and blended it out with some water and a brush …

Wings done, once dried I flipped it over and repeated for the back side. Below you can see the wings in place but this side still needs the putty work …

Here I’m roughing in the head mask … pretty much the same process but the head is rounded so i had to bend the putty to the head …

Above, the head mask fitted onto the head.

Unpainted, mask and wings in place ready for Monster Kolor paints.

A nice base coating of red starts the wings off.

Various shades of green are used on the Negora, keeping in mind the Devilman outfit.

Eyes, teeth and paw pads need to be painted and the whole figure is clear coated to seal the paint work.

The final figure … finally done !

While working on Devil Negora, I also began working on a painting. I knew in my mind that i wanted to show both characters in one scene, emerging from a storm cloud. This time working on canvas I started the painting with a full pencil under drawing.

Mixing up a raw siena and yellow oxide acrylics with matte medium … I use this mix to tone the canvas …

Below, I start painting in washes of paynes grey and black …

Here’s the progression of this process …

Below I start working on the sky and clouds …

Below working on the main figures adding colors …

Slowly working my way over the main characters …

Now starting to add highlights and making further adjusts to the figures …

And finally the finished painting ! To be honest I could have used another day on it but the deadline was up so a final varnish and boxed up both this and the custom, off to Japan 😉

Both pieces are up for sale, I ‘m not sure how the exhibit will be set up but I’ll post more info as i find out.

My thanks go out to Akashi-san of Medicom, Dynamic Pro and Go Nagai, the organizers of DZ40, Tokyo’s Tokyo, Yo Miyamoto of Max Toys for this wonderful opportunity.

I had a great time working on both of these pieces and hope they find good homes 😉
