Max Toy’s latest and largest figure, Kaiju Zanga has just been released in Japan, with a US debut very soon. Below is a quick look at my painting process for the hang tag on this figure. While we thought about a normal plastic bag with header on top, due to the over all size and weight of this toy we decided not too ;-P
My process is usually the same .. so if you follow this site you know i work on illustration board, hot press starting with HB pencil drawing. Once the drawing is done I move onto using acrylic paints in this case, paynes grey washes.
above: with the first part of the painting done I mask off all the areas but the sky. I’ll start to spray the sky, clouds and sun next.
above: the sky is about 80% done, I’ve removed all the masks to check on the values. I’ll go back in later to brighten up the clouds and Sun, but over all it’s going good.
Below: I’ve masked off everything but the far back ground ( or middle section ). I’m laying down a red orange desert color with some stippling texture.
Below: repeated masking off areas but left the Zanga and the foreground exposed to spray a cooler blue color.
Below: it’s hard to see but I’ve masked off everything but Zanga. here I’m laying in the brown tones over the Kaiju.
above: everything has color now. At this point I go back in and lighten some areas and add highlights. This step is slower process of pulling out the middle to lighter areas .. constantly adjusting values …
Below: the final painting of Kaiju Zanga ! Well, I went back in later and lighten the clouds a bit more but over all this is the final look. Below you can see the first hang tag we used for the Japan release. This hang tag is only one sided. I’ve since gone back and created a two sided hang tag for the US release and future Japan releases.
