I recently finished this painting for a poster and various other upcoming Max Toy uses. Titled “Kaiju Battle Royal”, and featuring almost all of the various Max Toy characters. I work with acrylic paints on illustration board, this one 15 x 20 inches.
Using a HB pencil I start laying out the various characters. I didn’t really have time to do any sketches or thumbnails and to be honest i don’t do them most of the time … I simply work it up on the board.
The basic idea was to have the Max Toy Kaiju, etc fighting in San Francisco .. thus the Cable Car, Sutro Tower, etc …. and in the old Japanese Toy style … so yes I know the perspective is wonky 😛
Adding more shading and details as i go along …
The final penciled piece above is lightly sprayed with workable fixative.
I start using paynes grey acrylics and paint in the values over the pencil drawing.
Working left to right .. ;-P
Above the entire under painting is finished at this stage. A light coating of matte medium is brushed over the whole surface to seal the under painting but also allows for the next step and color pencils to adhere to the paints.
I usually spray the sky with my airbrush but opted for a more painterly look this time .. so brushing in the sky.
Adding general colors to each character .. and slowly working from thin washes to thicker highlights.
Add some airbrushed details also working with some colored pencils for various Kaiju textures.
Close up above working on kaiju Eyezon.
Getting close to being done ! Phew this one was a lot of work ;-P
Above the final painting … the only thing left is for a final varnish.
Hope you enjoyed this step by step. Next post will feature the various Max Toys we will be offering for Comic Con 2012 via Rotofugi booth #4736 as well as via the Max Toy web store.
