Christmas 1973 holds quite a special memory for me .. of course at the time I had no idea how important that Christmas would hold for me some 30 years down the line .. for those who do not know my story, in brief, my aunt who was living in Japan at that time sent a huge box of Bullmark Kaiju and Heroes to me .. since my parents could not read Japanese ( they were born here ) they could not tell me what what each character was named .. but no matter, to me being 9 years old, these were the strangest, and bestest toys I’d ever seen !
This Ultraman Ace pencil box was from this Xmas haul .. over the next few months I will be slowly adding brief blogs and clips showing the items that have survived from this period of time.
Actually, I’m amazed it survived my childhood in near mint condition. With no cracks to the soft vinyl-like material on the outside of the box. Inside, the one thing that still stands out to me is the awesome “kaiju” roar the inner lid makes when released. Check it out in this YouTube clip 😉
When I was small I would open and shut that lid thousands of times !
During this time period, the Japanese excel at making many varied items in support of children’s series ..most items were “cheap” items like plastic masks, fans, shoes, clocks, pencils, bags, pinball games, etc and many items don’t really fit the show, like the Ace copter from a previous blog.. but still as a culture, the Japanese really do create a magical childhood with these items.
It’s funny because this type of stuff really is not worth much now and can be found from time to time on Yahoo Japan … but like a lot of collectors the memories are of course priceless ;-P
