Got this piece of wood from Bwana Spoons for his upcoming art show .. it was open to what we could do, so i’ve wanted to do a nice Ultraman type A style painting.. figured this would be a good time to do this. Started by applying gesso to the board. Than renedered in pencil the figure. Once the pencil was done I lightly sealed with workable fixative and went back in with paynes grey to darken up all the darks.
Next I washed in some reds for the suit as well as light yellow for the eyes ….
next I masked out the entire figure and went in with my Iwata C airbrush and laid in the suit colors. For tighter detail I used a Iwata B airbrush. Working from light to dark, and using free hand spray with hand cut stencils the figure was starting to “pop” as I added more dimension to it.
I removed the mask to see how the values were working. I than went back in with a 00 paint brush and tighten details, added colors to the chest timer, added more details to the eyes and mask.
the figure was masked off while i applied the back ground colors.. I wanted the back simple so decided on black with a stripe of red that also had gold leaf applied to it.
after removing the final masks, I went back in again to tighten areas around the figure, bumped up the blue reflected light… final size is 18×18, acrylics on wood panel.I’ll post more info on when this show goes up, and yes this is for sale 😉
