I have an article on the Discover Nikkei web site about the Beyond Ultraman show.
you may ask… well even I had to look that one up… but in short Japanese emigrants and their descendants who have created communities throughout the world. In my case my grandfather came to America during the 1920’s , I am Sansei or third generation Japanese American … and as many of you know i do not speak, read or understand Japanese… but can navigate Yahoo Japan in search of Ultraman toys 😉 So you see I’ve retained whats important about my culture ( I’m just kidding ). For many reasons many Japanese Americans have not retained their culture, I think mostly because of World War II and the time many ( including my parents ) spent in concentration camps in the US.
I’ve never really thought too much about the fact that I am Asian … and growing up in San Francisco never felt out of place..luckly I have not felt too much racism …well there was the time, 2 weeks ago when picking up Max, a guy yelled out of his car, Four eyed Chink ! at me … four eyed , yes, but wrong race .. still it made me aware that I am judged first by my outward appearance. But you know even with the occasional freak out there, this really is the best country to live in. No,not perfect, but we do have a chance to make it better, that my parents showed me, just by living their lives after the war and raising us without hate. I’ll never know what they went thru losing their liberties but I do know that more hate doesn’t make things better.
