Before toys were called Art Toys or Designer Toys and before I started making toys … my first career was as a commercial illustrator. In fact I did this freelance for 13 years after art school. During this time one of the fun assignments was for the series Goosebumps. I suppose during this period ( mid 1990’s ) Goosbumps was the Harry Potter of it’s time.. as kids could not get enough of them. Because of this they spun off a series called Give Yourself Goosebumps .. which I was lucky enough to do many of the covers for. Here are samples these .. the actual book cover and the art. Each original was fairly large .. about 20 x 30 inches on illustration board. The pressure was pretty high and turn around on these quick… 3-6 sketches in a few days followed by the finish in a week … since my rep was in New York ( and the publisher, too ) I had to finish them and Fed Ex them .. with fingers crossed that the art would not get lost in transit ..Oh this was in the days before email (!!) if your wondering why I did not just email the files …At the height of this horror craze I’d be doing 3-4 of these types of covers per month … a pace which quickly lead to an ulcer ( word to the new art student, you’ll kill yourself by taking every freelance assignment that comes your way ! ) Ah lesson learned !
Throughout my illustration career I suppose my role was to replicate looks or styles and quickly .. for many clients. I think the early covers I did was not my style, but as I did more of them I think I developed my look if you will.
I have this original on our wall at home and for the longest time Max was frightened by it … I think he’s still a bit afraid of it but I catch him looking at it from time to time.. and now he’s reading Goosebump and Give Yourself Goosebumps books (!) So it’s interesting how life brings things full circle.
